Colorado Christian Trauma Therapy

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) in Colorado

Do you feel trapped by a traumatic event?

Are you experiencing reoccurring memories or flashbacks?

Have you altered your life to avoid triggers?

Have you admitted to yourself that you can't just wish your PTSD away?

Don't stay stuck. There is a better way.

Reset Your Brain.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a highly effective trauma therapy that uses bilateral eye movements, similar to how your eyes move during REM sleep, to help your brain process painful memories and traumatic events.

Safe. Effective.

ART sessions are completely controlled and paced by you. We pause throughout the process to help your body achieve regulation before proceeding so there is very minimal risk of discomfort.

You don't have to talk during your ART session if you don't want to, which many people find helpful.

At the end, most people report that their ART session felt creative, relaxing, and even fun at times.

Fast Results. Lasting Change.

For most people, lasting results are achieved in 1-5 sessions.

When EMDR didn't help...

Many people who come to ART have tried EMDR in the past with no success.

For some, EMDR is not helpful and can actually be re-traumatizing. Their experience with EMDR leaves them with a new layer of angst and frustration on top of their trauma.

ART offers a faster, gentler path to healing.

ART differs from EMDR because it requires fewer sessions, does not ask you to stay in your traumatic memories for a prolonged period and you do not have to talk about your trauma.

ART actually soothes your brain and allows it to process the trauma in an intuitive and peaceful way. Many people report their ART session as being lighthearted and creative while also resolving their traumatic memories, which is often a very different experience than EMDR.

If you've tried EMDR but had a negative experience, Accelerated Resolution Therapy might be a good option to explore.

What Happens

in an ART session?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is all about memory reconsolidation, which is just a neuroscience term for re-writing memories in a way that helps heal and integrate your brain. This is done by gently reactivating problematic memories and encoding new memories and visualizations while practicing specific eye movements that are similar to REM sleep.

ART sessions are comprised of a variety of elements like guided visualization, and somatic check-ins that happen in a structured order. This ensures you feel regulated, safe, and calm during your session. ART allows you to be completely in control in an immersive experience.

Many people are surprised by how fast and powerfully ART sessions can resolve problematic memories. It's not uncommon for people to say that this was the first time they've ever experienced meaningful resolution to their PTSD or traumatic memories.

FAQ

How Long will it take?

ART sessions are 60-90 minutes long.

Many people find they only need 1 session to resolve an acute, one-time traumatic event. For reoccurring or complex trauma, more sessions may be required as we "batch" certain memories together in order to process them.

Is ART similar to EMDR?

Yes and no. Both ART and EMDR use bilateral stimulation to help engage both hemispheres of the brain. Both therapies aim to resolve trauma and traumatic memories that cause people distress in their daily lives.

ART is different in several ways:

- it requires fewer sessions

- it does not re-traumatize

- it requires minimal exposure to traumatic memories

- it does not require you to talk about your trauma

- it relies on the brain's natural creativity to bring healing

- it prioritizes regulation, gentle pacing, and positive imagery

Is ART helpful for grief?

Yes. ART sessions can be particularly helpful with traumatic loss. ART sessions can be used in conjunction with other forms of therapy to help you process grief and loss.

Will I need follow-up sessions?

Maybe. Many people find that one session is enough to bring lasting resolution to their PTSD and they have no need for follow-up sessions. However, scheduling an additional session can help you process any remaining memories or imagery that are distressing.

I'm already in Therapy. Can I see you just for ART?

Yes. It is quite common for people to add 1-5 ART sessions in conjunction with their regular ongoing therapy to help propel their healing. This can be particularly helpful for areas where traumatic memories might keep you feeling "stuck" in therapy. I am always happy to work collaboratively with your therapist to determine the best course of treatment.

I get vertigo, can I still do ART?

Yes. ART sessions utilize rapid eye motions that can be difficult for some people who are prone to vertigo or vestibular disorders. In some cases where the eye motions are not possible due to underlying medical conditions, we are able to utilize other methods of bilateral stimulation which do not involve the eyes.

I have eye problems, can I still do Art?

Yes. ART sessions utilize rapid eye motions that can be difficult for some people who are prone to focusing disorders or who have issues with eye health. Consult your medical provider and eye doctor before beginning the eye motions in ART. In some cases where the eye motions are not possible due to underlying medical conditions, we can utilize other methods of bilateral stimulation which do not involve the eyes.
